Every spring I get the same call: someone wants to wake up to the smell of the bay and the sound of the foghorn, but they don’t own an RV and they’re not about to wrestle a trailer through the gate at Doran. Doran sits right on the spit at the mouth of Bodega Bay, about a 45-minute drive west of Santa Rosa down Highway 12 and out the Bodega Highway, and it’s one of the few Sonoma County campgrounds where you’re camping with the surf on one side and the bay on the other.

Why I love delivering to Doran (and what it’s actually like out there)

Doran Regional Park is a Sonoma County Regional Parks campground, and yes — it has real overnight RV camping with sites strung along that low sandy peninsula between Bodega Harbor and the open Pacific. The loops here (Gull, Shell Beach, and the others) are mostly flat, which makes leveling easy, but here’s the thing I tell first-timers: the wind comes off the water in the afternoon and it does not let up. When I drop a rig here I point the door away from the prevailing northwest wind and make sure the awning is something you only put out on the calm mornings. Fog is part of the deal too — summer mornings out at Bodega Bay socked in until 11 or noon, then it burns off into a gorgeous afternoon. If you’re picturing wall-to-wall sunshine, that’s more of a September–October Doran experience than a July one.

The park is right next to the bay, so you’ve got easy boat-launch access, crabbing and clamming off the spit, a long flat walking beach, and the harbor a couple minutes up the road in Bodega Bay for fresh fish and oysters. It’s the kind of place I send people who want the coast without the long haul out to Point Reyes.

How delivery and setup works

You don’t need a truck, a hitch, or any towing experience to camp at Doran with us. Once you book your campsite directly through Sonoma County Regional Parks, you send me your site number and dates and I take it from there. I’ll meet the rig at your site, get it leveled and stabilized, hook up to your site’s utilities, and walk you through everything before I leave. When you check out, you pack up your gear and head home — I come back for the RV. For a coast trip like Doran, that delivery-and-setup model is the whole point: the access road and the loops out on the spit are narrow and sandy, and backing a big trailer in with the wind blowing is exactly the part most people don’t want to deal with.

Which RV I’d put on a Doran site

Doran’s sites handle a range of rigs, but my honest advice for the coast is don’t over-size it. A mid-length trailer or a smaller motorhome rides the wind better, fits the loops more comfortably, and still gives you everything you need for a few nights at the beach. When to book — Doran fills up

This is the part people underestimate. Doran is one of the most popular coastal campgrounds in Sonoma County, and the prime summer weekends and any holiday — Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day — go early. The county opens reservations on a rolling window, so the move is to lock your campsite the day it becomes available for your dates, then call me to reserve the RV. I’d rather you grab the site first; I can almost always match a rig to it. Shoulder season is the local secret: late September and October out here are clear, warm, and far less crowded than July fog season, and that’s when I’d personally book a Doran trip.

What to do from your Doran basecamp

Doran makes a great anchor for the whole west county. Here’s what I tell renters to fit into a long weekend:

• Crabbing and clamming off the spit — the jetty and beach at Doran are right there, and Bodega Harbor is two minutes up the road for bait, gear, and fresh-off-the-boat seafood.
• The Sonoma Coast drive north on Highway 1 — Salmon Creek, Goat Rock, and the overlooks up toward Jenner are some of the best coastline in California, all within a half-hour.
• Russian River day trip — head inland on Highway 116 to Guerneville and the redwoods at Armstrong; an easy hour from your site.
• Wine Country — you’re close enough to spend an afternoon around the Sonoma Plaza or in Healdsburg and still be back at Doran for sunset over the bay.
• Bodega village — the little town up the hill where they filmed Hitchcock’s The Birds; worth the short detour.

Not set on Doran? A few coastal alternatives

If Doran is booked solid for your dates — and in summer it often is — I deliver all over the Sonoma Coast and inland too. Bodega Dunes Campground is just up the road in Sonoma Coast State Park and has bigger, more sheltered sites tucked behind the dunes if the wind at Doran worries you.
